2016 Reserve Cabernet

The exceptional 2016 growing season yielded a robust and majestic expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet, with glorious aromas of black currant, tobacco leaf, black cherry, olive, sage and sweet French oak. Though rich and creamy on the palate, lovely underlying acidity adds brightness and nuance to the lush red cherry, cassis and anise flavors, with firm tannins hinting at a long, impressive life ahead.

With abundant winter rainfall, and a warm February, the 2016 growing season had an early budbreak. The early start to the season was followed by a warm summer without any significant heat events, and an ideally timed cooldown in August. The result was a robust crop of exceptional quality.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Dark ruby and purple color with concentrated aromas of black currant, sweet black licorice and violet. Oak-inspired elements of clove and integrated spice add further dimension. The texture is smooth and creamy, spotlighting ripe blackberry and cassis layers. Tannins are quite velvety, this complex and age-worthy wine will benefit from decanting in its youth. 150 cases made.
Vineyards
Stuhlmuller Vineyards is located at the southern edge of the Alexander Valley, where it converges with two other highly regarded Sonoma County appellations, Chalk Hill and the Russian River Valley. On its eastern edge, the 150-acre vineyard borders the Russian River. Situated in a unique location that is part river benchlands and part hillside, the vineyard benefits from its alluvial gravel soils and the more rocky soils that comprise the hillside sections of the vineyard.
The Clones
2008 was a fairly early harvest. After a normal bud break, we saw unusual April frosts in the vineyard. Though these frosts reduced overall yields slightly, our frost protection preserved fruit quality. A cool May was followed by a warm summer and a hot July/August finish, with our Cabernet Sauvignon coming in at a leisurely pace between September 18 and September 30. Despite the early harvest, the fruit showed beautiful ripeness and exceptional quality, with yields of roughly 2.5 tons per acre.
The Vintage
This is the second vintage of our Reserve Cabernet. The grapes for this blend were selected from mature vines to capture the signature essence of the vineyard. In the winery, the clusters were gently destemmed and fermented in an open-top, with manual punch-downs. To add structure and enhanced dark fruit character, it was co-fermented with a small amount of Petit Verdot. The finished wine was composed entirely of free-run juice, and was aged in 57 percent new French oak barrels. The wine was gently handled with minimal gravity racking from barrel to barrel. It was aged using premium cooperage for a total of 18 months.
