2015 "Cooper Block" Pinot Noir

Lush and inviting, this beautiful wine captures the essence of what makes Russian River Valley Pinot Noir so delicious. The nose offers lovely high-toned layers of red cherry and wild strawberry, along with hints of sassafras, earthy forest floor, tobacco leaf and roses. On the palate, a lush, creamy texture adds richness to an explosion of bright cherry, with layers of root beer, dried flowers, vanilla and sweet baking spices contributing nuance and complexity.

Vineyards
This complex Russian River Valley Pinot Noir comes from the acclaimed Starr Ridge Vineyard. Originally farmed by winemaking icon Gary Farrell, today Starr Ridge is cultivated by master winegrower Ulises Valdez. Though Starr Ridge’s eastern exposure ensures abundant sunshine, it is a notably breezy spot, where fog off of the Russian River cools the vines This wine is made from a combination of clone 115 and Pommard grapes. The tiny-berried clone 115 contributes intense fruit notes to the wine, while the Pommard adds structure and minerality.
The Clones
Though 2015 delivered the earliest harvest in our history, and very low yields, the quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. A warm winter and spring led to early budbreak, flowering and veraison. High temperatures in August further accelerated the pace of harvest, but with yields down by as much as 20 to 30%, everything was able to ripen beautifully, delivering lovely intensity. The grapes for our Cooper Pinot Noir were picked on August 13th, at 23.1˚ Brix
The Vintage
To enhance its natural complexity and rustic charm, this wine was fermented almost entirely as whole clusters. Punch downs were done infrequently, and were done gently by hand. A basket press was used and the free run wine was drained into one- and two-year-old French oak barrels, and aged for 15 months.
Food Pairing Notes
Smoked Salmon, Mushroom Risotto, Creme Brulee
