2015 "Block 12" Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Fabulously complex and inviting, this wine offers classic layers of crème de cassis, blackberry, violets and licorice. Though bold and intense on the palate, fine-grained tannins add a lovely freshness and textural elegance to the voluptuous flavors. The finish is long and satisfying with nuanced hints of tar and graphite mingling with dark berry fruit.

Vineyards
Our renowned vineyard features ten benchland and hillside blocks of Cabernet. To spotlight this diversity, we occasionally craft small-production Cabernets from our finest blocks. This limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the crown jewel of our estate—2.5 acres of Cabernet vines planted in the 1980s. Planted in silty soils on a gravel bed to the famed Belle Terra field selection, our prized Block 12 always yields some of our most complex and compelling Cabernet. Though 2015 delivered the earliest harvest in our history, and very low yields, the quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. A warm winter and spring led to early budbreak and veraison. High temperatures in August further accelerated the pace of harvest, but with yields down by as much as 30%, everything was able to ripen beautifully, delivering lovely intensity.
The Clones
Harvested on September 23rd, Block 12 was one of our last blocks to come in. Key fermentation techniques included indigenous yeast, 14-day maceration, and 100% whole berries. 50% of the blend was fermented in open-top tank, with the remainder in new French oak barrels. The final blend was made entirely from free-run wine and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, with 50% new oak.
